The Chord Electronics Hugo 2 is a high-end, battery-powered DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) and headphone amplifier designed for both desktop hi-fi setups and portable, on-the-go listening. Known for its industrial design with color-coded illumination spheres, it sits near the top of transportable digital audio gear.

Core Audio Technology

Unlike most DACs that rely on off-the-shelf conversion chips (from ESS, AKM, or Texas Instruments), Chord uses a custom-coded Xilinx Artix 7 FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array). Designed by digital audio engineer Rob Watts, the FPGA runs Chord’s custom Watts Transient Aligned (WTA) filtering with 49,152 taps. This yields exceptional timing accuracy, precise soundstage imaging, and ultra-low noise distortion.

Key Features & Capabilities

  • Format Support: Handles high-resolution audio up to 768kHz/32-bit PCM and native DSD512 over USB.

  • Filter Tuning: Features four user-selectable digital filters (ranging from Ultimate Reference Incisive to Warmer HF Roll-Off) to fine-tune sound signature.
  • Digital Crossfeed: Offers three DSP crossfeed settings that mix a small amount of left/right channel information to emulate a speaker-like spatial soundfield over headphones.
  • Line-Level Mode: Can bypass volume control to output a fixed 3V line signal via its RCA outputs, turning it into a pure standalone DAC for full-size stereo systems.
