The conrad-johnson ART27A is a ultra-high-end, reference-grade pure Class A stereo vacuum-tube power amplifier. Released as a statement piece by the legendary Virginia-based audio manufacturer, it is specifically engineered for high-efficiency loudspeakers and listeners who prioritize absolute purity, dimensionality, and timbral accuracy over raw output wattage.

Core Circuitry & Design Philosophy

Unlike typical high-wattage Conrad-Johnson amplifiers (like the ART150 or ART300), the ART27A trades raw brute-force power for the ultimate operational topology: pure Class A, triode-strapped KT88 operation.

  • Pure Class A Triode Operation: The KT88 beam tetrode tubes are reconfigured internally to function as triodes, delivering 36 Watts per channel. In pure Class A operation, output tubes run at full bias current 100% of the time, completely eliminating crossover distortion.

  • Independent Power Supply Regulation: The amplifier features separate, fully regulated power supplies for every single stage—including independent regulated supplies for each channel's output stage, as well as dedicated regulated supplies for the voltage gain and inverter stages. This prevents voltage sagging under transient demands and minimizes inter-channel crosstalk.
