The Atoll PR5.1 (released in 2004) is a unique crossover product from French High-End audio manufacturer ATOLL Électronique. It is an audiophile-grade 5.1-channel preamplifier designed to bridge the gap between traditional two-channel high-fidelity stereo and home theater surround sound.

Key Features & Design Philosophy

  • Audiophile Circuitry: Features fully symmetrical audio stages using discrete components across all 5 channels. Rather than relying on cheap operational amplifiers (op-amps) like many mainstream AV receivers, it maintains traditional Class-A style audiophile topography.

  • Heavy-Duty Power Supply: Built with a massive 160 VA toroidal transformer dedicated exclusively to the audio section, along with 20,000 µF of filter capacitance to keep distortion low and dynamics fast.

  • Optional DSP / Digital Board: The base PR5.1 functions as a pure analog multi-channel preamp. However, it could be ordered or upgraded with a DSP board featuring 24-bit/96 kHz Burr-Brown DACs and Crystal DSP processors for decoding Dolby Digital (AC-3), DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II.

  • Simple User Interface: Designed to avoid complex video menus. The front panel focuses strictly on source selection, volume control, and channel-by-channel level adjustment via a minimalist LED interface.
