The ELAC Alchemy DDP-2 (Digital Decoding Preamplifier) is a hybrid high-end component that serves as a 3-in-1 device: a full-featured analog preamplifier, a high-resolution dual-mono DAC, and a digital streaming endpoint. Designed by industry veteran Peter Madnick (who originally founded Audio Alchemy before ELAC acquired the brand), it packs reference-tier audio design into a slim 1U chassis.

Core Architecture & Engineering

  • Dual-Mono DAC Stage: Uses two AKM 32-bit DAC chips operating in a fully digitally balanced mode to process left and right channels independently, minimizing distortion and channel crosstalk.

  • Pure Analog Preamplifier: Unlike DACs that use digital volume attenuation (which can reduce bit depth at low volumes), the DDP-2 uses a digitally controlled analog resistor-ladder volume control.
  • Separated Power Supplies: Analog and digital domains are kept strictly separate—featuring a toroidal transformer with a linear power supply dedicated to analog stages, alongside high-efficiency regulation for the digital sections.
  • DSP & Upsampling Magic: Includes configurable DSP filter profiles, resolution enhancement (upscaling 16-bit to 24-bit, or 24-bit to 32-bit), and selectable sample-rate conversion up to 384 kHz / DSD.
