Thorens TD-1600 (Demo Unit) with Ortofon 2M Black – Premium Analog Performance

Experience high-end analog playback with this store demo unit of the Thorens TD-1600, now available at Audio D'Occasion.

Combining classical sub-chassis architecture with modern engineering, the TD-1600 features a decoupled conical spring chassis for outstanding isolation, a precise three-point suspension, and an ultra-quiet synchronous motor driven by an external power supply.

To unleash its full potential, this unit comes pre-installed and expertly aligned with the flagship Ortofon 2M Black moving magnet cartridge. Featuring a nude Shibata diamond stylus, the 2M Black delivers extraordinary detail, deep soundstaging, and remarkable tracking precision across the entire frequency spectrum.

Highlights:

  • Condition: Store Demo Unit (Ex-display, excellent condition)
  • Design: Sub-chassis suspension with internal steel spring arrangement
  • Tonearm: Thorens TP 92 (precision dampening & friction-free bearings)

The Thorens TD 1600 is a high-end audiophile belt-drive turntable introduced to modernize the legendary 1970s Thorens TD 160. It retains the classic aesthetic and iconic suspended sub-chassis architecture of its predecessor while introducing contemporary precision engineering to eliminate historical flaws.

Core Design & Engineering Highlights

1. Stabilized Suspended Sub-Chassis

  • Conical Springs: The platter and tonearm rest on an isolated aluminum sub-chassis supported by three adjustable, foam-damped conical springs anchored to the bottom plate.

  • Steel Thread Stabilizer: Classic spring-suspended decks (like older Thorens or Linn Sondek models) often suffer from lateral sway caused by the motor pulling the belt. Thorens solved this with a tensioned steel wire connecting the sub-chassis to a steel pin on the base plate. This restricts motion strictly to vertical piston action, preventing side-to-side wobble and improving tracking stability.

2. Advanced Motor Control & Power Supply

  • Synchronous AC Motor: Fitted directly to the main chassis and completely isolated from the platter/arm assembly.

  • Outboard Power Supply: Ships with a separate ±16V DC external power unit to isolate mains voltage and hum away from the delicate cartridge wiring.
  • Electronic Speed Switching: Push-button control for 33⅓ and 45 RPM (with fine-tuning pots on the back) rather than manually moving a belt across stepped pulleys.

3. Platter & Chassis Architecture

  • Two-Part Platter: Features a heavy, precision-machined 3.2 kg aluminum outer platter resting on an internal sub-platter.

  • Balanced Outputs: In addition to standard unbalanced RCA jacks, it provides balanced XLR outputs, allowing audiophiles using Moving Coil (MC) cartridges to run a fully balanced signal path to their phono stage.
